Ford & Lincoln Mobile Spec Pods
Upon the return of auto shows during the summer of 2021, one of Ford’s goals was to make vehicle information on the stand more accessible and easier to navigate. Normally spec information is put on a tablet in front of the vehicle. However, this limits the interactions visitors have with the app and also allows for only one user at a time. Additionally, Ford found that users were more hesitant to used shared devices after the COVID-19 pandemic as health and safety were on the forefront of everyone's minds.
As a result, product of this, solution for this (?) the new season of auto shows, we built Ford’s new mobile spec pods. Visitors were now able to scan a QR code and interact with the information on their own devices, as well as explore additional information using links within the application.
The spec pod application was Angular application that used deep linking to handle QR code scans. It was built with mobile as the primary use case, but completely responsive for those who chose to view the site again at home. The app was also made to WCAG AAA standards per Ford's digital standards. The content was managed using an in-house CMS system.
After the launch of the mobile spec pods, Ford continued to expand the application. We re-skinned the site so the same system could be used on Lincoln stands and we also created specialty versions for events like SEMA and CES where special product innovations were highlighted.
